NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Transit workers helped save an autistic boy who was walking on the train tracks at the Hoyt Street subway station in Brooklyn on Thursday morning.
A commuter noticed the 12-year-old boy was wandering along the tracks and used the Help Point call box to report it to the station agent who immediately alerted the Rail Control Center.
As the RCC was putting out an alert to trains in the area, the train operator of the number 5 express train spotted the boy between the express and local tracks at the station.
The Train Operator then stopped his train, opened the doors and managed to safely get the boy on board and took him to the Borough Hall station where he was turned over to the NYPD."This could have been a terrible tragedy if not for the alertness and professionalism of our Train Operator," TWU Local 100 President Tony Utano said. "You can never relax when you are operating a subway train. You have to be alert for anything out of the ordinary, and this story has a happy ending because this Operator spotted this child and managed to get him to safety."
