NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One month after President Trump halted U.S. funding to the World Health Organization, claiming the group had bungled its response to the coronavirus pandemic, Trump is now close to restoring some funding to the WHO, Fox News reported Friday night.
According to a five-page draft letter, the U.S. will "agree to pay up to what China pays in assessed contributions" to the WHO. The U.S. previously sent $400 million a year to the WHO -- but if the U.S. paid China's amount, it would be one-tenth of that.
A senior administration official confirmed to the show that Trump has agreed to the plan set out in the draft letter.
When the funding was halted last month, Trump said his administration would review the WHO's response to the potentially-deadly virus.
The draft letter says his administration's review "has confirmed many of the concerns I [Trump] raised last month and identified others."
The draft letter also allegedly reads, "Despite [its] shortcomings, I believe that the WHO still has tremendous potential, and want to see the WHO live up to this potential, particularly now during this global crisis. That is why I've decided the United States will continue to partner and work with the World Health Organization ... China owes a massive debt to the entire world, and it can start with paying its fair share to the WHO."
