NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Single-use styrofoam containers are technically outlawed in New York City as of the New Year, but the ban won’t be enforced until July.
Still, hungry food cart customers will likely feel the change – in the form of smaller, foil containers.
That means less rice in your chicken and rice from the local food cart, vendors say.

In Times Square Wednesday morning, food cart guy Andy said switching from styrofoam to aluminum will do absolutely nothing to keep our city streets clean.
“It’s going to be the same, they’re going to throw it in the garbage. What’s the difference?” he told 1010 WINS’ John Montone.
Unlike styrofoam, aluminum can be recycled, but Andy says that won’t stop people from throwing their containers all over the street and into overflowing trash bins.
Abdul the grilled meat man was torn between the two types of containers, but if he had to choose, “I say go for the aluminum, why not?”
Ernie was grabbing his morning coffee in Times Square Wednesday. He said his grandchildren have made him a greener kind of guy.
“No plastic straws, no styrofoam,” he said. “They’re instilling that to me and I’m pretty proud of that.”
