NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Hurricane Laura was upgraded to an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane," as Texas and Louisiana braced for its wrath, the National Hurricance Center announced around 1:30 p.m. 


"Hurricane #Laura Advisory 27A: Air Force Hurricane Hunter Aircraft Reports Laura Has Become an Extremely Dangerous Category 4 Hurricane," read the tweet. "Catastrophic Storm Surge, Extreme Winds, and Flash Flooding Expected Along the Northwest Gulf Coast Tonight."

The National Hurricane Center said the storm has maximum winds of 140 MPH, and urged residents within the storm's path, "Little time remains to protect life and property before water levels."
