NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A rat was spotted inside of a MetroCard vending machine by an MTA rider at the 1 train's 18th Street station in Manhattan around noon on Monday.

Subway rider Nicole Ranucci, took the footage of "MetroRat", as Gothamist is calling him and told them that she noticed the rodent as she was using the machine. "The rat dropped into the receipt holder from within the machine." Ranucci said.

"I believe the rat did get out on its own but I can't be sure as I needed to catch the train, but I'm sure it did because it kept lifting the door to try to escape." she added.

NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson articulated his reaction in a simple tweet "Omg!"

"This is very troubling and we're looking into how it could've happened, including the possibility that someone may have planted it," said MTA spokesman Andrei Berman. "This is clearly an anomaly and the recent Subway Action Plan, Group Station Manager program and deep clean program have been helping to get stations significantly cleaner."

The MTA recently announced that its new transit payment system, OMNY will replace the MetroCard beginning May 1, 2019.
