WEATHER: NYC under Heat Advisory Wednesday, Thursday; heat index could approach 100

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for New York City from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday evening.

The Heat Advisory—for all five boroughs—lasts from 12 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday, with the forecast calling for oppressive hot weather and humidity.

The high Wednesday is 86 degrees, but the RealFeel temperature will be about 96 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

The high Thursday will hit 90 degrees, with RealFeel temperatures nearing 100.

“A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time,” the National Weather Service said in its alert.

The National Weather Service said people should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned buildings, stay out of the sun and take precautions when working or spending time outside. Seniors and people with chronic health problems are at increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The NYC Department of Homeless Service also announced on Wednesday that a Code Red will be in effect on Thursday. 

"NYC will is expected to experience extreme heat tomorrow. The Department of Social Services (DSS) has issued a #CodeRed Alert for tomorrow, initiating enhanced outreach efforts. During this time, transportation is available to cooling centers via our outreach teams."
