GROTON (1010 WINS) — The driver of a fuel truck that exploded after a crash was killed on Friday and several others were injured as oil spilled into the river and fire shut down traffic on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge in Connecticut Friday, according to officials.

The bridge, which is part of Interstate 95, carries traffic over the Thames River between New London and Groton.

A tire blew out on a passenger vehicle just after 11 a.m., causing an accident that impacted the fuel truck, according to authorities.

The crash happened on the southbound side of the bridge, but both lanes were shut down by the accident, causing significant delays on I-95.

About 2,200 gallons of home heating oil spread out over the roadway, set fire to some land on the Groton side of the bridge and spilled into the river, according to Gov. Ned Lamont.

State environmental staff worked to contain the spill.

An undisclosed number of people were injured in the accident, but officials said their injuries are not life threatening. No buildings caught fire in the blaze.
