DARIEN, Conn. (1010 WINS) -- One person died after an SUV left the road and went into Five Mile River in Connecticut that empties into the Long Island Sound early Friday, authorities said.

At around 12 a.m., police received a report of a Nissan Rogue headed east on Route 136 crossed into the westbound lane and left the road near the Rowayton town line, then struck a fence and plummeted into the Five Mile River where it meets the Long Island Sound, Darien Police Capt. Jeremiah Marron Jr. said.

Responding officers found the vehicle almost completely submerged in the the near-freezing river, Marron said.

Police jumped into the water after finding a victim floating face down in the outgoing current about 100 yards away from where the vehicle entered the river.

The officers brought the unresponsive victim to a nearby dock and began life-saving resuscitation efforts, Marron said.

Darien firefighters went into the water to find additional victims and pulled another person from the submerged SUV.

Additional information about the victim's condition was not available, police said.
