NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 1-year-old baby boy died on Wednesday after his family dog attacked and bit him several times in Connecticut, police said.
The attack happened at around 3 p.m. at the family's home in East Hartford.
Lennox was playing on a trampoline with his mom when the attack happened, according to his aunt, Crystal' Rod, who put up a GoFundMe page.
Rod said that they were going to celebrate his first birthday that day.
The dog, described as a Dalmatian, was a family dog, according to Rod. Several news sites reported that the breed was a Dalmatian pit bull mix.
"I was on the phone with my sister when the Dog jumped on the trampoline and attacked both Lennox and his mother," Rod wrote. "Believe it or not it was the family dog and never in a million years would we have seen this coming."
"Despite the valiant efforts of medical professionals, who arrived on the scene and provided immediate lifesaving measures before transporting the toddler to the hospital, the child succumbed to his injuries," East Hartford Police Officer Marc Caruso said.
The incident is under investigation and two dogs have been removed from the home, Caruso said. They were taken to an animal shelter in South Windsor.
The GoFundMe for Lennox has received $16,000 in donations for his funeral service.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones as they mourn their loss," Caruso said. "May they find solace and strength during this challenging time."
The deaths come just days officials in New Jersey launched an investigation into the death of a baby that was attacked by the family dog during the weekend.
