NEWARK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 2.6 magnitude aftershock hit New Jersey on Wednesday—among nearly 50 aftershocks recorded in the state since last week’s rare 4.8 magnitude quake rocked the New York City area.

Wednesday’s tremor was recorded 5 kilometers below Gladstone in Somerset County at 10:22 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Gladstone is about 15 miles northeast of Whitehouse Station, where Friday morning’s 4.8 magnitude quake hit.

It’s the second-strongest aftershock in the wake of the big trembler. The strongest was a 3.8 magnitude aftershock that hit 8.5 kilometers below Gladstone on Friday evening.

Wednesday’s aftershock was the 47th since the main earthquake; most of them have been below a 2.0 magnitude.

While no significant injuries have been reported from the earthquake or aftershocks, they've rattled nerves in a metro area that's not used to them. Indeed, last week’s earthquake was the strongest to hit the Garden State since 1783, the Bergen Record reported.
