2 hurt after jumping from window to escape Newark house fire

NEWARK, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Two New Jersey residents were hospitalized Thursday after jumping out of a window to escape a house fire in Newark.

The fire started around 7 p.m. on the top floor of a three-story home on Chadwick Avenue, near Hawthorne Place, according to the Department of Public Safety.


The blaze quickly escalated to 2-alarms and roughly 70 firefighters responded to the scene.

During the fire, two individuals jumped from a window at the residence to escape the smoke and flames, officials said. They were transported to University Hospital for treatment but there was no immediate word on their condition.

A total of 10 residents have been relocated due to the blaze. Officials did not specify if they all lived in the 3-story residence.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control just before 8:30 p.m.

The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety's Arson Unit.
