WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – At least four people—including two residents of Queens—were killed in Long Island car crashes over the weekend, police said.
The two Queens victims—identified as Jevon Lyken, 19, and Debarpita Dey, 18—were approaching exit 35 on the westbound Southern State Parkway in West Babylon around 5:40 a.m. Sunday when their Infiniti Q50 rear-ended a Jeep Compass, according to New York State police.
The impact forced the Infiniti onto the right shoulder and off the roadway, where the vehicle struck a tree, police said.
Lyken, who was driving, and Dey, who was the sole passenger, were killed on impact.
The force of the crash caused the Jeep to spin out of control and hit a concrete barrier before it came to a rest in the left lane, police said. The driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
State police are asking anyone with information to call (631) 756-3300 as the investigation into the crash continues.
About two hours before the West Babylon crash, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck at Merritts Road and Colonial Drive in South Farmingdale, Nassau County police said.
Officers found the victim lying on the roadway with severe head trauma around 3:40 a.m. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital and hasn't yet been identified.
Police believe the driver of a silver or gray pickup truck struck him and then fled the scene. No arrests had been reported as of Monday.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
Sunday's deadly crashes followed a fatal, single-vehicle crash in East Garden City early Saturday morning, according to Nassau police.
A 37-year-old woman was driving a Nissan Rogue eastbound on Stewart Avenue shortly after midnight when she apparently lost control and struck a concrete parking lot wall near Selfridge Avenue.
She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She hasn't yet been identified.
