ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Four people were killed and eight hospitalized, some with severe injuries, after a shuttle van for upstate New York factory workers overturned in New Jersey early Friday morning.
Police got a call just before 1:30 a.m. about the single-vehicle rollover crash on the southbound Palisades Parkway, just north of Exit 1 in Englewood Cliffs.
A Ford Econoline E350 passenger van with New York plates overturned in the center median while carrying 12 people.
Some of the passengers were trapped and had to be extricated, police said.
Four people suffered severe trauma and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Eight more people were taken to area hospitals with injuries ranging from severe head trauma to minor physical complaints, according to police.
None of the victims have been identified pending family notification.
The van was a shuttle bus for workers returning home from factories upstate. The vehicle was still lying on its side as the sun came up over the parkway.
A man at the scene, Zoilo Sanchez, was trying to find out what happened to his close friend, who was in the van and has four children back in the Dominican Republic.
“I come here for information for my family,” Sanchez said. “Because I don’t know if he’s killed or no.”
The southbound lanes of the parkway were shut down at Exit 2 for about six hours, but they reopened just before 7:45 a.m. after the van was removed around 7 a.m.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Bergen County Sherriff’s Office and Palisades Interstate Parkway Police are investigating the crash.
