NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Four firefighters were injured and over 30 people displaced after a large three-alarm fire broke out at a building in Newark, New Jersey and spread on Friday night.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said that just before midnight, firefighters responded to a fire at 11 Seymour Ave., an unoccupied residential building.

The blaze quickly caught two nearby, occupied buildings on fire, escalating to a two-alarm fire at 12 a.m. and a three-alarm fire at 12:04 a.m., officials said.

Citizen App footage from the scene shows bright orange and red flames coming from an engulfed building as ash falls from the sky, and large clouds of smoke obscuring the surrounding area.

While combatting the blaze four firefighters were injured in a partial building collapse at the back of one of the buildings. They were transported to University Hospital and are in stable condition, authorities said.

The American Red Cross said it is helping 34 people from seven families with emergency assistance including temporary lodging, food and clothing.

The Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
