TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Drivers who hold their phones while stopped at red lights in New Jersey could soon face fines, according to a report.

A bill sponsored by New Jersey Sen. Richard Codey aims to crack down on distracted driving by penalizing drivers who text or hold their phones while they are stopped at red lights or in traffic, NJ.com reported.

If the proposed bill passes, any driver who does so will be slapped with a $200 to $400 fine for a first offense; a $400 to $600 fine for a second offense; and an $800 fine and a license suspension of up to three months for a third offense, according to the outlet.

The Senate Transportation Committee approved the bill on Tuesday, the outlet reported.
