BABYLON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A wrong-way drunk driver crashed into a Long Island boatyard on Sunday night, sparking a fire that engulfed her car and four boats, Suffolk County police said Monday.
Lorrie Ibe, 54, was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated following the fiery crash in Babylon.
It was around 10 p.m. that dispatchers first received 911 calls about the driver of a 2021 Kia Forte going southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 231, police said.
The driver—allegedly Ibe—eventually crossed into the southbound lanes, striking multiple road signs along the way, according to cops.
At East Main Street, she went over the median and through a fence before crashing into a boat parked on land at the Suffolk Marine Center, police said.
The boat burst into flames—a fire that spread to three additional boats, according to police. The charred remains of the boats were still outside the boat business on Monday morning.
Responding officers and a bystander pulled Ibe from the Kia, police said. She was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Babylon Fire Department responded and extinguished the boat fires.
No other injuries were reported.
