NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Brooklyn man was indicted Wednesday after he allegedly sped in a car while drunk and high, causing a crash on the Long Island Expressway that led to the death of a 9-year-old boy, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said.
Travis Dickson, 28, whose license was previously revoked, was driving a 2018 BMW 540i around 2 a.m. on Aug. 22, allegedly under the influence of alcohol and impaired by marijuana, prosecutors said.
Dickson, who was found with marijuana, was allegedly speeding 119 mph westbound on the Long Island Expressway and did not use his brakes before slamming into the back of the victim's father's 2019 Toyota Corolla.
Prosecutors said the impact of the BMW crushed the back of the Toyota, where the 9-year-old boy was restrained in his booster seat.
The boy was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, as was the victim's father, where he was treated for his injuries.
Two days later, the 9-year-old succumbed to his injuries.
"Another young life was cut short because of poor judgment by this reckless driver," DA Ray Tierney said in a statement. "A 9-year-old child will never have the chance to experience life and his father is now left with the mental and physical pain of the fatal day that has forever changed his life."
Dickson was indicted Wednesday on an 11-count indictment, including manslaughter and reckless driving.
He was held on $500,000 cash, $750,000 bond, or $1 million partially-secured bond and his license was suspended.
Dickson is due back in court on Dec. 14.
