NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A carjacker briefly stole a vehicle from a New Jersey parking lot with a child inside on Sunday prompting authorities to remind drivers to always lock their cars.

The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. at the Chase Bank parking lot on the corner of County Road and Central Avenue in Tenafly.
According to police, calls were coming in about a man testing car doors and fleeing the scene in a dark colored BMW SUV when he found them locked.
The suspect found an Audi A8 sedan left running in the Chase Bank parking lot while the driver went into the bank’s foyer to use the ATM.
When the victim saw the suspect start to drive away, he ran out to try and stop the theft by grabbing the driver’s side door handle. The victim was knocked to the ground as the car sped away. He sustained a minor hand injury.
The theft was happening with the victim’s 11-year-old son in the back seat, unbeknownst to the carjacker.
The car's driver tried to chase the suspect on foot as he drove out of the parking lot onto Central Avenue before coming to an abrupt stop near the intersection of West Railroad Avenue.
The thief got out of the vehicle and hopped into the same BMW SUV which was following close behind.
The child was not harmed during the brief encounter and was reunited with his father.
