The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday that detectives from their office, along with Franklin Township police, are actively investigating a child's death.

The New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office has been notified and will be responding to conduct the investigation, the office said.

The prosecutor's office said no additional information will be released at this time, but sources told NBC New York that the child may have been left in the car for up to seven hours before they were found at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The child's guardian allegedly forgot the child was in the car, the sources said.
