NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced on Saturday morning that he had been discharged from a New Jersey hospital after spending a week there for COVID-19.
"I am happy to let you know that this morning I was released from Morristown Medical Center," he tweeted. "I want to thank the extraordinary doctors & nurses who cared for me for the last week. Thanks to my family & friends for their prayers. I will have more to say about all of this next week."
Christie, 57, announced last Saturday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 -- as did others in the Trump White House universe -- and he then announced a few hours later that he had admitted himself to Morristown Medical Center as a "precautionary measure" because he suffers from asthma, an underlying health condition.
As of Friday, the former Republican lawmaker was still under observation, and there was no indication that he was on ventilator, CNN reported, citing a source familiar with his condition.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday said Christie "is a fighter, let there be no doubt about it. He's the quintessential Jersey fighter. So we are all with him in thoughts, prayers and we are here to do whatever we can for him."
Murphy said he "exchanged notes" with Christie on Wednesday night but had "no further insight" into his condition.
“I shot him a note, as I had done a couple of days earlier, just to say that we’re here for him,” Murphy said during a coronavirus briefing in Trenton. “He was very gracious in his reply. And he remains in our prayers.”
On Monday, Star Ledger columnist Tom Moran said he spoke with Christie, whose voice sounded raspy. Moran said Christie acknowledged that his weight and asthma are reasons for concern.
Christie's son Andrew, who works in scouting for the New York Mets, said on Monday his dad was in COVID-19 isolation room.
Christie tweeted last Saturday he was admitting himself to Morristown Medical Center "In consultation with my doctors ... While I am feeling good and only have mild symptoms, due to my history of asthma we decided this is an important precautionary measure. I am thankful for our hardworking medical professionals and look forward to coming home soon."
About six hours before announcing he was checking into the hospital, he announced his postive COVID-19 test results, tweeting, "I just received word that I am positive for COVID-19. I want to thank all of my friends and colleagues who have reached out to ask how I was feeling in the last day or two. I will be receiving medical attention today and will keep the necessary folks apprised of my condition."
