NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Connecticut woman who was arrested in Washington, D.C. after hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building last week was "never even that close to the building" and did not know she was on Capitol grounds, her attorney claims.
Victoria Bergeson, 40, of Groton, was arrested and charged with curfew violation and unlawful entry around 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 6, the Connecticut Post reported.
In an interview with the Post, however, Bergeson's attorney, Sam Bogash, said she was at the Peace Monument when she was arrested, not inside the Capitol building.
Bergeson's boyfriend Mauricio Mendez, 42, was also arrested at the monument, but Bogash is not representing him.
"I don't think half the people in D.C. know that's Capitol grounds," Bogash told the outlet. "They thought they were standing on a traffic circle 100 feet from the lawn that leads up to the Capitol building, but it was Capitol grounds."
"For her to be convicted, the government would have to prove that she was knowingly on Capitol grounds when she shouldn't have been," he added. "I don't think they can prove she knew she was on Capitol grounds."
Bergeson is expected to appear in court on June 10, the outlet reported.
