HARTFORD, Conn. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A Connecticut man was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison Tuesday for defrauding Amazon out of nearly $750,000.
During his sentencing in Harford, Oshane Stewart was also ordered to pay full restitution and will be subject to three years' supervised release.
Amazon assisted the FBI in its investigation, which found Stewart, 31, defrauded the company out of $742,231.16.
The U.S. Justice Department said Oshane Stewart created multiple vendor accounts with Amazon, including under fake names, which allowed him to sell merchandise through the website on a third-party basis.
After setting up the accounts, he told Amazon he was shipping over valuable merchandise to be held for sale by the company. Instead, he didn't ship the merchandise and claimed it had been lost, according to the DOJ, which said he even created fake documents to support the claims.
Amazon sent Stewart a series of refunds for the purportedly lost merchandise.
The scheme also involved his brother, Kenoy Stewart, who pleaded guilty to the charges against him and admitted to costing the company losses of more than $1 million, according to the DOJ.
A third man, Rajhni Yankana, also awaits sentencing in the case.
