
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (1010 WINS) -- A 20-year-old man and a teenage boy were charged for allegedly stealing a car at gunpoint then robbing a pawn shop in Connecticut last week, police announced Sunday.
Just after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1, West Haven police received a call reporting a carjacking that took place in North Haven.
According to Sgt. Patrick Buturla, two males, both armed with guns, allegedly assaulted "an Uber driver and discharged a firearm while forcibly removing the victim from his vehicle and then driving away in the 4-door white Toyota Camry."
Police then received a call of an armed robbery at the East Coast Pawn shop located at 961 First Ave. in West Haven. The suspects were identified as two "males armed with handguns operating the same white Toyota Camry," officials said.
Officers spotted the suspect vehicle but "lost sight" of it and ended a pursuit "due to the extreme reckless manner in which it was being operated and subsequently the pursuit was terminated," police said.
Police later received a report of the vehicle crashing in the vicinityof Glade Street. "Through investigative techniques officers were able to ascertain these individuals last known whereabouts," Buturla said.
A search warrant was executed for an apartment on Treat Street in West Haven after 4 a.m. on Sunday where officers found both suspects as well as "numerous items of evidentiary value as well as firearm related items."
Officers took Mehki Stewart, 20, and a 17-year-old boy into custody. They were both charged with first-degree robbery, criminal possession of a firearm, engaging officers in pursuit and third-degree larceny.
