SEA GIRT, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A father dug through sand to save his 2-year-old son after the boy became buried by a sand collapse at a Jersey Shore beach over the weekend, police said.
The toddler was playing on the beach off Neptune Place in Sea Girt shortly before 11:30 a.m. Saturday when the sand around him caved in.
The boy's father jumped into action and "quickly extricated" him within two to three minutes of the collapse, police said.
The child remained conscious and alert during the ordeal. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment and observation.
The area of the collapse was secured, and access restricted, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and marine and dredging contractor Weeks Marine work to assess and evaluate the site, police said.
