NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Yonkers Police Department said a 16-year-old driver was behind the wheel of the luxury BMW sports car that crashed into an unmarked police vehicle on Thursday killing an officer.

The teenager was driving alone with only a learner’s permit and speeding when the crash took place, according to officials.

New York State law mandates anyone driving with a learner’s permit be accompanied by someone 21 or older with a driver's license.

The boy lost control of the vehicle on Tuckahoe Road at the Sprain Brook Parkway overpass, careened into the opposite lane and slammed into an unmarked police vehicle, killing 53-year-old Sgt. Frank Gualdino.

Gualdino was a 24-year veteran of the force.

A Westchester County Bee-Line Bus was also struck in the crash. The driver and several passengers suffered minor injuries.
