Drunk driver was going 113 mph before fatal crash in NJ

PENNSVILLE, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A prosecutor accused a drunk driver from Pittsgrove Township of traveling at 113 miles per hour when he crashed into another driver, killing her.

Stephen Karwowski, 30, was driving a pickup truck north on Route 39 in Pennsville on Dec. 4 when he slammed into the passenger side of Genita Townsend, a 52-year-old mother who was making a left turn into a restaurant parking lot.

His truck recorded him driving 113 mph 3.5 seconds before the crash and 70 immediately before, NJ.com reported.

The speed limit was 40 mph.

When police arrived, they measured Karwowski’s blood alcohol level at 0.122%. The legal limit to drive is 0.08%.

Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene.

Karwowski was charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide and assault by auto.

If convicted, Karwowski faces a maximum of over 46 years in prison, with a minimum of 15 years.
