ELMONT, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A foul odor led police to dead dogs inside an SUV on a residential street in Nassau County on Tuesday.

The grim discovery was made in Elmont at 7 p.m. as county police officers responded to a 911 call about a 2016 black Ford Explorer parked on Diellen Lane.

The caller was concerned about a "bad odor emanating" from the vehicle, police said.

When officers investigated, they found two large dogs dead in the backseat of the Ford.

Few other details were immediately released by police as the investigation continues.

It's unclear how long the dogs may have been in the vehicle or how they died.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.
