'Foul odor' leads to discovery of decomposing body in NY basement: police

NEW CITY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A body in a "heavily decomposed state" was found in the basement room of a Rockland County home Sunday, police said.

Clarkstown police launched an investigation after receiving a call requesting a welfare check for the residents at the New City home on Ruth Drive.

Family members told responding officers they discovered "a strong odor" coming from a room in the basement of the residence, according to police. Upon inspection, officers discovered the body.

The Rockland County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and removed the body. Their identity has not been released at this time.

The Clarkstown Police Department's Detective Bureau has begun an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
