NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A man wanted for attempted murder was taken into custody on Monday after a tense standoff with law enforcement resulted in shots fired, police said.

The suspect barricaded himself in a home located at 445 Irvine Turner Blvd. at around 11 a.m., where Newark police responded to assist the U.S. Marshals Service in apprehending the man, who was wanted out of Hillside.

At one point, police said that shots were fired from inside the house at law enforcement officials. No officers were struck or injured.

The suspect had a baby with him during the standoff, according to Mayor Ras Baraka. Police said that he used to child as a human shield.

“I do know he did have a baby. I know the police retrieved the baby from his custody. We have the child, and so the child is not in danger, thank God,” he told reporters. “I don’t know what he was trying to do or what it was about, I do know he had a child with him and the police safely removed the child from his care.”

Authorities said that the child is unharmed.

The suspect was taken into custody after 3 p.m.
