UNIONDALE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 17-year-old girl is facing charges after she slashed two other students with a box cutter at Uniondale High School on Monday, the same day a Lindenhurst Middle School student was stabbed and six people were fatally shot at a Nashville school.
Nassau County police said the Hempstead teen got into an argument with a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old girl while walking in a highway.
The argument turned physical when the girl allegedly punched the 17-year-old student around 11:20 a.m. The suspect pulled out the knife and lunged at the student, who suffered a minor cut to her left ring finger as she raised her hands to defend herself, according to police.
The 18-year-old student intervened in the fight and was cut on her cheek when the suspect swung the weapon at her.
School security and teachers were able to break up the fight until police arrived.
The suspect was not hurt, and the two victims were treated at the scene by medics, but their parents refused further medical treatment.
Their identities have not been released at this time.
The suspect was charged by police with second-degree assault, third-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and second-degree menacing.
Also on Long Island Monday, Suffolk County police said a 12-year-old boy stabbed a 13-year-old boy in the leg during a fight in a second-floor hallway of their middle school.
That same day, three 9 year-old children and three adult staff members were killed at a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. Police shot and killed the shooter, a former student.
Nassau County police said all schools would see increased patrols Tuesday because of the Nashville shooting, while Suffolk County police said there would be increased patrols at Lindenhurst Middle School because of the stabbing there.
