LINDENHURST, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Police on Long Island were increasing patrols at some schools Tuesday following the stabbing of a middle school student in Lindenhurst and the fatal shooting of six people at a school in Nashville on Monday.

Nassau County police said all schools would be seeing increased patrols because of the Nashville shooting, while Suffolk County police said there would be increased patrols at Lindenhurst Middle School because of the stabbing there.

A 12-year-old boy brandished a six-inch knife and stabbed a 13-year-old boy in the leg during a fight in a second-floor hallway of the middle school around 12:30 p.m., according to Suffolk police.

“There was a kid, and they were like fighting,” a student witness said, “and then he pulled out the knife and he stabbed him in the leg and there was blood all over everywhere.”

Security quickly responded and applied a tourniquet to the injured student’s leg, as did a responding Suffolk police officer, likely saving the boy’s life.

The boy was rushed by county police chopper to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He was said to be in critical but stable condition.

Suffolk County Police Deputy Inspector Sean Beran said the boy “lost a lot of blood.”

“The wound is up in his leg towards his groin. A lot of arteries and stuff up there,” Beran said.

The 12-year-old was arrested and charged with juvenile delinquency.

Parents rushed to the school to pick up their children only to find the building was in a 90-minute lockdown.

When students were eventually let out, many were crying.

“One of the teachers had blood all over their pants,” one student said through tears. “It’s just sad to me that people do this to other people.”

The Lindenhurst school superintendent said in a statement that “safety and security is a top priority” for the district.

The stabbing came the same day that three 9-year-old children and three adult staff members were shot and killed by a 28-year-old woman at a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. The shooter—who officials said was a former student—was killed by police. A motive is under investigation, but officials said the attack was meticulously planned.
