EAST GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A man faces charge after he allegedly attacked two officers who were transporting him to a warming center on Long Island amid dangerously cold weather on Monday night.
Temps in the New York area are brutally cold this week, and the officers had been called to check on the man inside a parking garage at the Roosevelt Field shopping mall in East Garden City.
According to police, the officers made the welfare check around 10:40 p.m. at 630 Old Country Rd., as wind chills plunged towards 0 degrees.
The officers offered the man medical attention, which he declined, but he did request to be taken to a warming center, police said.
As officers were transporting him to a warming center in Wantagh, he became combative and grabbed an officer’s shoulder and right index finger, according to police.
He allegedly bent the officer’s finger, causing a sprain, and then violently resisted both officers as they tried to subdue him, police said.
He allegedly swung his arms around and attempted to strike the officers during the wild encounter.
Both officers suffered lacerations and injuries to their hands during the struggle, and one also suffered a shoulder injury, police said.
The suspect—Kysaan Goff, 29—was ultimately arrested and taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
He faces two counts of second-degree assault, police said.
