The suspected murder-suicide happened at an apartment building in Woodcrest at Fairfield, a residential community for adults over 55 located on West Greenbrook Road in Fairfield.
The couple's home health aide found them stabbed at their residence, according to sources.
They were rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but did not survive.
The incident appears to be domestic, with the husband stabbing his wife and then himself, sources said.
Residents of the normally quiet community awoke to find ambulances, police cars and trucks from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office filling the parking lot.
“We see a lot of ambulances come in and out, because they’re elderly and they die, and there’s heart attacks and all these things, but this is shocking,” one woman said.
