NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Prosecutors determined on Monday that the deaths of a married couple found inside their New Jersey home last week were the result of a murder-suicide.
On March 19, officers from the Keyport Police Department responded to a house on Chingarora Avenue in Keyport after receiving a request for a wellness check, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago said.
Upon arrival, they found the victim, Ekaterina Kalyapina, 37, and her husband Ilya Gagin, 39, dead inside.
Prosecutors revealed that Kalyapina had been killed by her husband Gagin. He then died by suicide. Prosecutors did not say what Gagin used to kill his wife or himself.
Two small dogs were also found unharmed, police said. Monmouth County SPCA was contacted and took custody of the dogs.
An autopsy conducted by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause and manner of death as homicide and suicide.
Anyone with information about this matter is asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Michael Donovan, III, or Keyport Sergeant Joseph Rendina, at 732-264-0706.
