NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A New Jersey man had a woman and child in his car as he tried to cross the George Washington Bridge in what police called a “domestic violence abduction” on Wednesday, but he was pulled over and arrested after the woman passed information about their whereabouts to 911 dispatchers.
The woman was able to stay on the phone with 911 for about two hours, connecting with dispatch operators in Edison as the car moved through the township at about 3:30 p.m. while traveling north across central Jersey.
Township police said that the woman spoke “cryptically,” and she discreetly provided information about where they were moving while in the backseat with the child.
Authorities alerted towns throughout the state to look for the car as the abduction was ongoing, but eventually the woman relayed enough to dispatchers that they could alert Port Authority Police that the abductor was heading toward the George Washington Bridge.
The car was spotted on Route 80 as it drove toward the bridge’s lower level, and officers pulled the car over on the toll plaza during rush hour traffic at about 5:45 p.m.
Police escorted the woman and child to safety, and they were unharmed.
Chukwuebu D. Emegoakor, 39, was charged with kidnapping, criminal restraint, terroristic threats, endangering another person and false imprisonment, Port Authority said. He is being held in Bergen County Jail.
