NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Long Island church is ringing its bell every six seconds for the next two weeks to pay tribute to the 218,000 people in the U.S. who have died from COVID-19 this year.
The Congregational Church of Patchogue began ringing its 850-pound bell at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The bell will continue ringing every six seconds until Nov. 1.
"The 218,000 rings represent the life of those in the U.S. who died of COVID-19 in less than a year," the church said in a Facebook post.
As of Sunday evening, 219,661 people have died in the U.S. from COVID, according to John Hopkins University.
