MANHASSET, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — The Nassau County Police Department is warning motorists to look after their cars at the car wash to make sure thieves aren’t jumping behind the wheel and speeding off.

Two cars, a Mercedes and an Audi, were stolen recently at car washes in Manhasset and Oceanside respectively, according to police.

Law enforcement tracked down the Audi to New Jersey but haven’t yet recovered the Mercedes.

Both of the vehicles that were stolen were reportedly left open as they dried.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder recommends using car washes that allow you to stay in your vehicle. If that’s not an option, he says you can ask the attendant to give you the key fob once the car comes out of the wash.

You can also invest in a kill switch, a remote control that lets you turn off your car from a distance, if you’d like to be extra safe.

“You should never lose sight of your vehicle,” Ryder told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall. “As soon as it gets out, make sure that the company that’s doing it pulls that vehicle aside and then ask them to shut the car off and give them the keys as they go to dry the vehicle. Do not leave the car running in that situation.”
