NEW YORK (1010 WINS/ WCBS 880 NEWS) – A dog on Long Island was found stabbed 17 times last month and the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced a reward for information that can lead to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible on Thursday.
Cornell, a two-year-old Terrier mix, was found injured and bleeding on Nov. 27 on Washburn Avenue in Freeport, Long Island.
His condition shocked those who found him.
"Cornell can't tell us his story,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said. “He can't tell us what happened. He can't tell us why or when something like this happened to him. We just know he was found bleeding from the 17 wounds.”
A woman who found Cornell brought him to a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter in Hempstead. The extent of his injuries was beyond their capacity to treat.
Cornell was later transferred to a veterinarian hospital in Farmingdale, where he has remarkably survived his injuries.
"Some of the stab wounds caused his lungs to leak air between his body cavity and his lungs, and they had to be drained a number of times. The other stab wounds were cleaned, stapled, or sewn," Donnelly said.
The Nassau County DA's Office is asking the public for any information regarding the incident. Those who have information related to this case, can call the animal crimes hotline at 516-571-7755.
SPCA announced a $5,000 reward for any information that may lead to an arrest.
"People who commit crimes like this against animals can be very dangerous, also to people. We need to find out who did this to Cornell," Donnelly said.
Despite the stabbing, Cornell has made a full recovery.
He is now searching for a calm and loving forever home.
The individual responsible for this attack could face a maximum sentence of 2 years in jail if convicted.
