RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880/1010 WINS) — After an exclusive WCBS 880 report on school bus stop arm cameras giving tickets to people who should not have received them, one county lawmaker said he's taken action.
Suffolk County Legislative presiding officer Kevin McCaffrey said Wednesday that he has heard the complaints from drivers and that he spoke with the out-of-state bus company.
"The intent of it has become very different than what the outcome has become," he said.
The company has promised to fix the problems, and there will be no more "gotchas" when it comes to giving out driver's tickets.
Residents told WCBS 880/1010 WINS they got $250 tickets for passing buses when no children were getting on or off — or they had already passed the bus when the stop arm came out.
"The 'gotchas' must be eliminated, or the program itself will be," McCaffrey said.
McCaffrey said if the promised changes are not made, the legislature will push to terminate the contract with the bus camera company.
The county executive's spokesperson said the program is designed to keep children safe.
