UPTON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Suffolk County jury convicted a 43-year-old man of fleeing police while drunk driving culminating in a high-speed crash that killed a 27-year-old man, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.
On Jan. 12, 2020, Jordan Randolph was driving a 2014 Cadillac ATS southbound on the William Floyd Parkway while heavily drunk in Upton.
A police officer saw him swerve into the opposite lanes at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Rose Executive Boulevard. When the cop tried to pull him over, he refused to stop.
Randolph made a sudden U-turn at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Dawn Drive before fleeing northbound at a high speed.
As he was speeding away, he slammed into a 2015 Ford Escape driven by 27-year-old Jonathan Flores Maldonado.
The impact flipped Flores Maldonado’s vehicle and sent it skittering down the road. He was killed in the crash.
An event data recorder in Randolph’s car revealed he was traveling at 137 mph seconds before the crash.
A blood sample collected about two hours after the crash showed a blood alcohol level of .23% — more than double the legal limit.
“This defendant made a series of selfish, deadly, and utterly reckless choices,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney. “When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated, you are not just putting your own life at risk, but everyone else’s as well.”
The jury found Randolph guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault, aggravated DWI, fleeing a police officer and related charges.
At the time of the incident, Randolph already had a pending criminal charge for circumventing a court-ordered breathalyzer test required to start his car from a previous drunk driving incident. He has multiple DWI convictions dating back to 2011.
He faces 15 years-to-life in prison when he’s sentenced on March 28.
