Carlos Ortega attacked his two nephews with a metal pipe when they came to visit relatives who were visiting from Guatemala in August 2018.
He chased his 23-year-old nephew with the pipe and beat his leg to the point where it had to be amputated.
When his other nephew confronted him, he bashed him in the face.
Both men were brought to Southside Hospital for treatment.
Ortega was arrested in Dec. 2018, but, as soon as he posted bail, he fled to Guatemala.
There, he lived as a fugitive until U.S. Marshals arrested him in February 2022.
“This defendant’s assault was vicious enough to cost one of his victims a limb,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney. “Instead of communicating, this defendant chose violence. Then, instead of facing the consequences of his action, this defendant tried to flee to another country. He fled so he would not have to answer for his actions.”
The District Attorney’s office did not specify the nature of the disagreement that led Ortega to attack his nephews.
Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 21.
