HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — An 18-year-old high school student from Long Island was arrested on Tuesday for making a “threat of mass harm” on social media, Suffolk County Police said.
Officers responded to Huntington High School at 11:30 a.m. after being tipped off that the teen girl made the threat on Snapchat.
“The female student was charged with making a threat of mass harm,” a Suffolk County Police spokesperson said. “She will be taken for evaluation and arraigned at a later date.”
The teen’s identity has not been released.
Superintendent of the Huntington Union Free School District Beth McCoy said that the threat was non-credible, but still issued a letter to the school community regarding the incident.
“We understand that situations like this can affect students in various ways. If your child feels the need to talk to someone about this or any other concerns they may have, please reach out to the mental health staff in your child’s building for support,” she wrote.
McCoy also noted that threats or similar actions “may have serious consequences and can impact our entire school community.” She said that the school district is working closely with School Resource Officers and local police to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff.
