MALVERNE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Malverne is changing the name of a street Thursday that’s currently named after a Village of Malverne founder who was also a Ku Klux Klan leader.
Lindner Place, a road that runs through downtown Malverne, will become Acorn Way at the unveiling ceremony.
The street is currently named after Paul Lindner, who helped found the village in 1921 and was also a grand cyclops of the KKK.
Grand cyclopses were the chief officers of dens — the basic level of organization on a local level — at the time Lindner was a member.
The Malverne Village Board unanimously voted to change the name in September after a campaign by Malverne High School students and other community members.
The activists showed Lindner participation in cross burnings and KKK rallies during his time leading the group.
“I am thrilled this has finally come to fruition,” Malverne Superintendent Lorna Lewis said. “After all these years that have allowed this name to stand, the community is doing what they’re supposed to be doing.”
