OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A Long Island woman was arrested and charged on Wednesday after allegedly crashing her car that contained a one-year-old child into a pole while intoxicated, and then refusing to relinquish him for medical evaluation, the Nassau County Police Department said.

Stephanie Almonte, 34, of Freeport, was driving a black 2014 Toyota Camry eastbound on Brower Avenue, in the vicinity of Chance Drive in Oceanside, when police said she struck a pole.

When officers and paramedics attempted to assess if the child needed medical care, police said that the accused “refused to relinquish the child and became irate.”

Officials were eventually able to take possession of the child and get him to an area hospital for assessment and treatment.

Almonte was removed from the vehicle and arrested before being transported to an area hospital for treatment.

It was not immediately clear the extent of injuries sustained by Almonte or the child, if any.

The defendant was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), DWI, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated family offense.

Almonte was also charged with two counts of criminal contempt, second-degree obstructing government administration, six counts of second-degree harassment and three charges related to driving while unlicensed.

Police said that the defendant will be arraigned when medically practical.
