COMMACK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 47-year-old woman pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $250,000 from a Commack summer camp, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

Between 2016 and 2020, Melanie Bergstedt diverted payments to the camp into accounts she owned with similar names.

She was an employee at the camp during that time period.

“This defendant placed her own greed above the welfare of children by stealing money earmarked for a summer camp and pocketed it for her own personal use,” said Suffolk District Attorney Raymond Tierney. “If you steal from local businesses, you are also harming the Suffolk County community at large.”

Bergstedt pleaded guilty to grand larceny. Sentencing is scheduled for May 8.
