FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A 36-year-old man was critically injured by a lightning strike while golfing in New Jersey on Sunday, officials announced.
The golfer was hit by lightning and collapsed at about 6:10 p.m. on the Pinch Brook Golf Course in Florham Park, police said.
Local police responded after receiving reports of the lightning strike and a man experiencing cardiac arrest.
First responders found bystanders actively performing life-saving efforts on the victim, including a veteran Florham Park First Aid Squad member and retired Morris County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mark Chiarolanza, who happened to be on the scene.
Some witnesses told officials that the man lost consciousness and stopped breathing after the lightning strike.
Officers continued CPR until they were relieved by medics. The man was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center for further treatment.
The victim’s condition was unknown Monday morning.
“We commend the quick response and immediate [life-saving] efforts by not only trained medical personnel in the right place at the right time, but also civilians just wanting to help to save the life of a stranger,” Florham Park police spokesperson Brian Ford said in a press release.
This incident is the second time a man has been struck by lightning on a New Jersey golf course this summer, following the death of 28-year-old Simon Mariani, who was struck on July 8 at the Ballyowen Golf Club and died a week later.
