NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a German tourist, and injured her husband, near Bryant Park on Wednesday afternoon, according to police and sources.

The driver was behind the wheel of a Toyota Sienna when he reversed into the 50-year-old woman and her 55-year-old husband around 2:40 p.m. at West 40th Street and Fifth Avenue, near the New York Public Library, police said. The couple was pinned between the minivan and a box truck that was behind it.

The woman was pronounced dead on arrival at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. The man was in stable condition.

The man and woman were tourists visiting the city from Germany, according to sources and witnesses.

The driver fled the scene but was arrested a short time later at West 38th Street and Eighth Avenue. Police identified him as Mohammed Abouzaid, 40, of the Bronx.

Abouzaid faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing death and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. He was due in court Thursday.
