
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One person died after a fire on the top floor of a Brooklyn apartment building prompted two people to jump out of the windows on Monday, fire officials said.
The blaze happened at about 2 p.m. at a six-story apartment building located at 165 Rockaway Parkway in Brownsville.
There was heavy smoke and fire coming from the building's top floor when firefighters arrived at the scene, FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Carney said.
Two men who were seen hanging from the top floor windows before falling onto the pavement, including a 49-year-old man who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, FDNY officials said.
The second man fell onto a small patch of grass in the front of the building and was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.
A third victim remains hospitalized, while a fourth was able to able to walk away, authorities said.
Fire officials were able to quickly get the fire under control.
The cause of the flames remains under investigation.
