NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Eleven residents at a Newark senior apartment building were hospitalized for carbon monoxide exposure Saturday morning, according to officials.

Staff discovered the leak after two residents of the Stephen Crane Elderly Apartments were found unconscious around 5:40 a.m.

Eleven residents were brought to two nearby hospitals for shortness of breath and light-headedness.

All of the sickened residents are in stable condition.

The leak was traced to a furnace in the basement of the building, and PSE&G was notified of the problem, the Newark public safety director told NJ.com.
