Staff discovered the leak after two residents of the Stephen Crane Elderly Apartments were found unconscious around 5:40 a.m.

Eleven residents were brought to two nearby hospitals for shortness of breath and light-headedness.

All of the sickened residents are in stable condition.

The leak was traced to a furnace in the basement of the building, and PSE&G was notified of the problem, the Newark public safety director told NJ.com.
