NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Police are investigating after a 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting in the Bronx on Thursday evening during a fight between two groups of kids over a social media beef.

The shooting occurred at 4:14 p.m. at 762 Cauldwell Avenue in the Melrose section of the Bronx. What was said online was unknown, but police said that it led to an in-person fight between two groups.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and later succumbed to his injuries, officials confirmed.

Police have not identified the victim, and no arrests have been made.

“You can make videos of people, you can just post it, you can go viral, and you know, without any proper context, you already got like a mob of people kind of forming an opinion about you,” a family therapist who lives in the area and works with kids, sometimes in violent situations, told 1010 WINS/WCBS 880.

The NYPD's Tech Assistance Response Team, which processes digital evidence, was on the scene.

“You don’t expect it, especially living right in front of it too, but it’s the Bronx” Antonio Aguilar, who lives steps away from where the fight and shooting occurred, told 1010 WINS/WCBS 880.

An investigation is ongoing.
